What are peptides? A plain guide to choosing the right one
Published January 21, 2026 · Push Med, Greenville, SC
Peptides have become one of the most searched topics in health and longevity, and one of the most misunderstood. At their simplest, peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins, just far smaller.
How they work
Peptides act as signalling molecules. Rather than forcing an outcome, they tell the body to do something it already knows how to do: produce collagen, repair tissue, regulate appetite, modulate inflammation or support immune function.
Size is what separates a peptide from a protein. Proteins are large molecules with complex three-dimensional structures; peptides are short, simpler, and typically more targeted in what they signal.
Why the 'best peptide' question has no single answer
The useful question isn't which peptide is strongest, it's what you're trying to change. Recovery, lean muscle, sleep quality, skin and hair, immune support and mental clarity are all different signals, and they don't share one protocol.
Your labs, medications, history and goals all shape whether peptide therapy is appropriate at all, and which pathway makes sense. That's a provider decision, not a shopping decision.
What a first visit looks like
Expect a conversation about symptoms and goals, a review of your history and bloodwork, and a clear explanation of what's realistic and over what timeframe. If peptides aren't the right starting point, we'll say so.
