Weight gain and fatigue: signs you need hormone testing
Published September 21, 2024 · Push Med, Greenville, SC
Unexplained weight gain and persistent fatigue are especially frustrating when lifestyle changes don't seem to move anything. Often these symptoms trace back to hormonal imbalance affecting metabolism and energy.
The hormones that shape weight and energy
Insulin regulates blood sugar and storage; when cells stop responding well to it, weight gain becomes easier and weight loss harder. Thyroid hormones set the pace of metabolism, and an underactive thyroid can bring weight gain, fatigue and low mood together.
Cortisol, chronically elevated, encourages fat retention and appetite. Estrogen and testosterone both influence energy and body composition, and leptin and ghrelin govern fullness and hunger.
Red flags worth noticing
Hormone-related weight gain often arrives without any change in diet or training, and comes packaged with fatigue, muscle weakness and difficulty losing weight. Rapid gain concentrated in the face, abdomen or upper back deserves prompt evaluation.
Fatigue types differ too: feeling "wired but tired" and leaning on caffeine looks different from thyroid fatigue that persists after a full night's sleep.
Accompanying symptoms fill in the picture, mood swings, anxiety, poor sleep, irregular cycles, hot flashes and night sweats, skin changes, hair thinning or lower libido.
What testing looks like
Comprehensive bloodwork covering thyroid markers, sex hormones, cortisol, blood sugar regulation and key nutrients gives our provider a pattern to interpret against your symptoms and history. Repeat labs then show whether the plan is working.
